Academic Program

Fellow conferences: 4 per month Type: Clinical, Research, Fellow presentation, Journal Club

Extra-institutional educational conference support: 1 per year (plus any at which fellow presents)

In last five years fellows were 1st and 2nd author on: Abstracts and Journal articles

Funding: Dept/Institutional Funds, Pharmaceutical/equipment industry grants, Peer-review grants

Dedicated research time: 1-2 days per week (increases after first year depending on fellow)

Echocardiography instruction: ECHO laboratory, free textbooks, workbooks, tapes, CD ROM, Didactic lecture series

Critical care rotation: Optional

Formal course work available in: biostatistics, epidemiology, study design, medical informatics

Maximum length of non-OR rotations: 4 months out of 12 total months (flexible)

Clinical Program

# of cardiac procedures with CPB per year: 1,400

# of non-cardiac thoracic cases per year: 700

# of heart, lung and heart/lung transplants per year: 110

# of major vascular cases per year: 200

Distribution of cardiac cases: 60% offpump CABG, 65% CABG, 25% Valves, 10% Other

Operating Room equipment available: transesophageal echocardiography, ECG ST segment analysis, transcranial Doppler, mixed venous oximetry, evoked potentials, cerebral blood flow/transcranial Doppler

Special features, requirements or comments about program: Wonderful mixture of routine cases and extremely high technology transplantation and implantable assist devices. Flexibility for fellow depending on his/her clinical and research interests.
